Housefly Description, Disease, Life Cycle, & Facts

house fly

Nutrient-rich substrates such as animal manure provide an excellent developmental substrate. Very little manure is needed for larval development, and sand or soil containing small amounts of degraded manure allows for successful belowground development. When the maggot is full-grown, it can crawl up to 50 feet to a dry, cool place near breeding material and transform to the pupal stage. By keeping your house clean — especially free from food waste — you can help prevent a housefly infestation. Moreover, houseflies are highly mobile creatures capable of traveling several miles from their birthplace during their short lifespan.

Life Cycle of a Housefly: Birth, Buzz, and Beyond

A remarkable aspect of this phase is how quickly housefly larvae grow. They can increase their weight by nearly 200 times within just a couple of days! This rapid growth is crucial for their survival as it allows them to store enough nutrients for metamorphosis into pupae. During this stage, which lasts approximately four to seven days, depending on environmental conditions, the larvae undergo two molts. Each molt signifies a new instar or developmental stage within the larval phase.

Comparison With Other Flies: Differences And Similarities With Other Common Flies

Adult houseflies are attracted to a variety of foods, including human food waste, animal feces, and nectar from plants. However, it’s important to note that while they can feed on these substances for nourishment, they cannot digest complex proteins or carbohydrates as humans do. Houseflies, known scientifically as Musca domestica, have a unique and fascinating reproductive process.

scientific name: Musca domestica Linnaeus (Insecta: Diptera: Muscidae)

When the flies pupate at greater depths the conditions favor Sphalangia cameroni. In North Florida, releases conducted with Sphalangia endius showed that they could successfully parasitize pupae, both above and below the soil surface. The species most often released for biological suppression in North America are Muscidifurax raptor, Muscidifurax raptorellus, Sphalangia endius, and Sphalangia nigroaenea.

And if you have a severe problem and the home remedies don’t work, we’ve included chemical solution options too. Indoors, the control of flies includes automatic misters, fly paper, electrocuting and baited traps that can be used in milk rooms and other areas of low fly numbers. In agricultural areas, manure can be scattered over fields so that it quickly dries and becomes unsuitable for egg and larval survival.

House Fly Larvae

They have gray or black bodies, large red eyes, and two nearly translucent wings. House flies have slightly hairy bodies, and females are larger than males. Houseflies may carry on their feet millions of microorganisms that, in large enough doses, can cause disease. Garbage, manure, and similar wastes that cannot be made inaccessible to flies can be treated with larvicidal drenches or dusts. Residual insecticidal sprays are effective against flies for several weeks; however, some houseflies have developed resistance to certain insecticides, such as DDT.

Trying fly sprays or insecticides

Indoors, ultraviolet light traps collect the flies inside an inverted cone or kill them with an electrocuting grid. One trap should be placed for every 30 feet of wall inside buildings, but not placed over or within five feet of food preparation areas. Recommended placement areas outdoors include near building entrances, in alleyways, beneath trees, and around animal sleeping areas and manure piles. Openings to buildings should be tightly screened with standard window screen, thereby denying entrance to flies.

Termite Control

The constant moisture in drains provides a suitable environment for flies to breed. Understanding these physical transformations not only gives us insight into how adaptable nature can be but also helps us better manage our interactions with these ubiquitous insects. If an infestation does occur, there are many natural and trapping methods to try.

What is a fly pupae?

The house fly overwinters in either the larval or pupal stage under manure piles or in other protected locations. Warm summer conditions are generally optimum for the development of the house fly, and it can complete its life cycle in as little as seven to ten days. However, under suboptimal conditions the life cycle may require up to two months. As many as 10 to 12 generations may occur annually in temperate regions, while more than 20 generations may occur in subtropical and tropical regions. In order to prevent a house fly infestation from happening in the first place, vigilant sanitation is a must. Regularly removing trash and using well-sealed garbage receptacles can help to deter any house flies from residing around waste bins.

If she is not interested or does not consider the male fit for reproduction, she will reject his advances by moving away or even becoming aggressive. Humidity also plays an important role in this stage of the life cycle. If it’s too dry, the protective casing around each egg can become too hard for the emerging larvae to break through. On the other hand, if it’s too wet, there’s a risk that water could get inside and drown them.

It pushes its way out using an inflated pouch on its head called a ptilinum which deflates shortly after emergence. In addition to these auditory signals, tactile cues also play an essential role in housefly courtship. The male gently strokes the female with his legs while simultaneously continuing his wing vibrations – adding another layer of complexity to this fascinating ritual. Houseflies, like many other creatures in the animal kingdom, have their unique mating rituals. These rituals are a fascinating display of behaviors and signals that houseflies use to attract mates and ensure the continuation of their species. Here you should visualize small worm-like creatures called maggots.

Over her short lifespan of about a month, she may produce up to six batches, resulting in approximately 500 to 900 eggs in total. Once the breeding site has been disposed of, eliminating the existing adult flies is the next step. A pest control professional will develop a house fly treatment plan based on the circumstances of the infestation, which may include the use of fly bait, applications or traps. They are attracted to a wide variety of food substances but particularly favor decaying organic matter such as garbage or feces.

However, houseflies are not considered a significant carrier of diseases. People using fly sprays or insecticides must take care to prevent direct contact with the skin or eyes and avoid inhaling them. Pyrethrin has low toxicity but can irritate the skin or trigger other mild symptoms. The housefly’s transformation offers an insightful look into the adaptability and resilience of these creatures that are so common in our surroundings yet often overlooked.

Lastly, human activity indirectly affects the life cycle of houseflies too. Improper waste management provides abundant breeding grounds for flies leading to population explosions in urban areas. This ensures genetic diversity among offspring and increases the chances of survival for future generations.

what is graphical design

Graphic designers start as interns or junior graphic designers working for a company as part of an in-house design or at a design agency. They rise from there to higher positions such as senior graphic designers, art directors, creative directors, and others. If you want to have more control over your career progression and start from a higher bargaining position, you can go the freelance route. Usually, graphic designers start as generalists, which means they can do a variety of designs. However, in-demand graphic design specialists earn higher. The third route is specializing in a type or area of graphic design. You can single-handedly increase your earnings and attract more premium clients, agencies, or companies by specializing in an in-demand area of graphic designs.

As you start your degree course at Middlesex, the first year gives you an opportunity to explore and experiment with a wide range of approaches to graphic design. The first year is designed to build your foundational knowledge of typography – the art of working with text which underpins all areas of graphic design practice. You will also engage with a range of media and design skills, from photography to digital illustration, from printmaking to design thinking. Divided into four modules, projects are designed to encourage experimentation and hands-on making, with a focus on the design process, as much as final outcomes. You are invited to think critically about your work by engaging with a range of design ideas, both contemporary and historical. In-house graphic designers enjoy the stability of a “traditional” work environment.

Another high paying option is for management positions like art director or creative manager, with salaries for high-level positions like these ranging from $76,600 to over $110,000. The beauty of freelancing, though, is that you can plot your own course. No rule says you can start your career by freelancing, or even freelance while also working with agencies. All of this means that you can quickly correct if you need to learn new graphic design skills or try a new market to remain competitive. The hardest part of freelancing, of course, is the business aspects.

Each type of design requires specific graphic design skills and techniques. There is no concrete path for graphic designers to follow, leaving the door open for aspiring designers to forge their own route. On the strategic side, a graphic designer empathizes with the way their audience communicates and caters to the message of speaking this language. UX stands for User Experience, and this creative field is largely found in digital design. UX designers focus less on specific visuals and more on interactivity, which informational and interactive flows will work best for the user and make it easier for them to accomplish their tasks through an app.

For example, if you typically push curtains aside during the day, consider tying them back or picking up a few curtain hooks to secure them. Since its founding in 2012, Zehana Interiors has gone from strength to strength and their portfolio has grown to include award-winning museums, public infrastructure and luxury hotels. The firm's ideology is driven by the fact that society is never sedentary it is constantly adapting and evolving. Interior design should be a natural and seamless extension of the architecture, melding together the old and the new to give each and every object a sense of meaning and belonging. With a team of prolific young talents, the practice promises to bring innovation and excellence to every project they take on. So, whether you are honoring the geographical location of your home, or simply want to bring a bit of seaside serenity to your landlocked abode, these Californian home decor ideas will inspire.

Aim for Timelessness

You can either repurpose old furniture to create one or design a brand-new cabinet that opens into a bar. Carolyn Miller gave a minimalist farmhouse a makeover that shows the power of styling with restraint. The pared-down background serves as the perfect canvas for the clients' art collection. You’ve heard us say this before – never underestimate the power of changing your cushions and throws. These small changes can make a huge difference to the look of your living room.

Symmetry in interior design is often used by the experts to create a space that looks incredibly tidy and smart – and it's perfect for simple living rooms as it can be done with ease. Using architectural elements such as windows is a good place to start. You can easily choose a standard circular or square coffee table to complete the look in your living space, but if you want to truly change things up, try going for an unconventional shape instead. Whether you go for an abstract wood carved option or a geometric shape like this elegant living room, it's a simple and effective way to give your space an entirely different vibe. To keep the room feeling open and airy, opt for a glass table that doesn't visually break up your layout. To redecorate with items you already have, consider taking a minimalist approach to your living room's design.

STEEL FIREPLACE

Evenly distribute pops of brown throughout the living room in the form of wood furniture, upholstery, window treatments, and decorative accents. You’ll typically see lots of solid surfaces in a minimalist space, so to keep it interesting, bring in contrast through a variety of materials. In this gorgeous space, a lush velvet sofa and boucle armchairs add softness, while a luxurious black marble coffee table with brass legs brings in a cool element and wood beams on the ceiling warm up the room. Edit the living room and remove any unnecessary pieces that don’t serve a key functional or decorative purpose.

Transform With Wallpaper

There are lots of ways to incorporate this enduring combination into your home. When selecting paint shades, consider the orientation, of the room, suggests Simon Temprell, interior design manager at Neptune. ‘Blue and white has been a classic color combination forever as it is clean, crisp, and uplifting, especially in south-facing rooms. In a north-facing room, you might need to use a warmer white to offset the chill,’ he explains. A rougher, textural shiplap paneling can help create a more rustic feel, and contrasts with the eggshell finish of painted kitchen units. Shiplap can be painted in any color, but it is important to dilute the paint so that the texture of the timber shows through.

But if you’re already a fan of minimalist strategy, you will agree that the most striking interior design is not influenced by what you have piled into any room, but rather, what you have left out. Get inspired by these minimalist living room setup ideas with mastered streamlined, pared-back style. "In small living rooms, choose multitasking furniture like storage sofas or convertible tables," Artem Kropovinsky, interior designer and founder of Arsight tells Real Homes. This way, you won't overclutter the space with lots of bulky furniture items that will impede flow and make the space look busy and claustrophobic. A small space might, in fact, be perfect for a minimal interior design scheme, after all. Laëtitia adds, "You have to remember that minimalistic doesn't equal boring or sterile. It's more about the careful curation of items and furnishings," continues Laëtitia.

The living room seating has become more multi-purpose as the routines of family life change. Nowadays, a living room sofa is not just for entertaining or watching TV; we eat on them, use our laptops and play games from them, so it is imperative that we invest in one that will stand the test of time. Adopt these simple and inexpensive design principles to create a space that is focused, functional and fashionable. Maybe your lease doesn't allow it, or maybe you simply don't have the patience. Thankfully, you can fill your walls up with your favorite photographs and prints. Choose personal photos, your favorite work from local artists, or maybe even art of your own—just keep gallery wall best practices in mind.

We love this velvet coral number, and despite it being a bold choice it doesn't overwhelm the room because the floors and walls have been kept fresh and neutral, with just pops of color from the room's accessories. Before we get into all those lovely living room furnishings, let's just focus on the practical stuff quickly like living room layout ideas. Whether you are starting totally from scratch in a new room or want to update your existing space, deciding on a layout can dictate your decor choices. Just because you have a small living room does not mean you have to skimp on style when it comes to decorating. Each one offers ideas for how to pack a lot of style and function into a small space using only simple things, but without making things feel crowded or uncomfortable.

9 1 Setting Up a Factorial Experiment Research Methods in Psychology

mixed factorial design

Finally, the researchers asked participants to rate their current level of disgust and other emotions. The primary results of this study were that participants in the messy room were in fact more disgusted and made harsher moral judgments than participants in the clean room—but only if they scored relatively high in private body consciousness. To illustrate a 3 x 3 design has two independent variables, each with three levels, while a 2 x 2 x 2 design has three independent variables, each with two levels.

Confounding a main effect (an important idea)

As a final example, researchers Peter Rentfrow and Samuel Gosling asked more than 1,700 university students to rate how much they liked 14 different popular genres of music [RG03]. They then submitted these 14 variables to a factor analysis, which identified four distinct factors. These ideas can be confusing if you think that the word “independent” refers to the relationship between independent variables. However, the term “independent variable” refers to the relationship between the manipulated variable and the measured variable. Remember, “independent variables” are manipulated independently from the measured variable. Specifically, the levels of any independent variable do not change because we take measurements.

Mixed Factorial Designs: Analysis and Interpretation

Much more important, however, than a design name is for the author to provide an accurate description of what was done in the research study, so the reader will know exactly how the study was conducted. Simultaneity (“Simultanität”) forms the basis of the distinction between concurrent and sequential designs. In a sequential design, the quantitative component precedes the qualitative component, or vice versa. In a concurrent design, both components are executed (almost) simultaneously.

mixed factorial design

Factorial Designs¶

So, the main effect of wearing shoes is to add 1 inch to a person’s height. If you opt for a quadplex or fourplex floor plan, the building will consist of four independent, but connected, residences. Many of these designs feature a layout where both sides of the duplex are identical except they’re reversed (“flipped.”) Other duplex styles may appear as one, large family home with separate entrances. Homeowners who want to earn some extra income and investors often choose multi-family homes because you're able to live in one of the residences while renting out the others.

2. Two-way RM ANOVA as a mixed-effect model…

Multi-family homes are great solutions when land is limited or in areas with steep housing costs. This is because you're able to have multiple dwellings in one building that requires less land than detached homes. (4) using a framework (theoretical or program) to bind together the data sets (Creswell and Plano Clark 2011, p. 76). (d) Utility or improving the usefulness of findings – refers to a suggestion, which is more likely to be prominent among articles with an applied focus, that combining the two approaches will be more useful to practitioners and others. (a) Credibility – refers to suggestions that employing both approaches enhances the integrity of findings.

5.1. Correlational Studies With Factorial Designs¶

mixed factorial design

And, both of the red bars (IV2 level 1) are higher than the green bars (IV2 level 2). The dependence among components, which may or may not be present, has been summarized by Greene (2007). It is seen in the distinction between component designs (“Komponenten-Designs”), in which the components are independent of each other, and integrated designs (“integrierte Designs”), in which the components are interdependent.

Instead of controlling these variables by random assignment or by holding them constant as in an experiment, the researcher measures them and includes them in the statistical analysis. Consider some research by Paul Piff and his colleagues, who hypothesized that being lower in socioeconomic status (SES) causes people to be more generous [PKCote+10]. They measured their participants’ SES and had them play the “dictator game.” They told participants that each would be paired with another participant in a different room. (In reality, there was no other participant.) Then they gave each participant 10 points (which could later be converted to money) to split with the “partner” in whatever way he or she decided. Because the participants were the “dictators,” they could even keep all 10 points for themselves if they wanted to.

If we think about what we might confound with blocks to construct a design we typically want to pick a higher order interaction. As an exercise toward this goal, we will first take a closer look at extracting main effects and interactions from tables. This exercise will how the condition means are used to calculate the main effects and interactions. After you become comfortable with interpreting data in these different formats, you should be able to quickly identify the pattern of main effects and interactions.

V. Chapter 5: Experimental Research

Therefore this is another way to understand a split-plot design, where you confound one of the main effects. Remember, an interaction occurs when the effect of one independent variable depends on the level of the other independent variable. We can look at this two ways, and either way shows the presence of the very same interaction.

You may find that the patterns of main effects and interaction looks different depending on the visual format of the graph. The exact same patterns of data plotted up in bar graph format, are plotted as line graphs for your viewing pleasure. Note that for the IV1 graph, the red line does not appear because it is hidden behind the green line (the points for both numbers are identical). Regardless of whether the design is between subjects, within subjects, or mixed, the actual assignment of participants to conditions or orders of conditions is typically done randomly.

Then it had important meaning and you certainly would want to pull this out and be able to test it. Experiments that include more than one independent variable in which each level of one independent variable is combined with each level of the others to produce all possible combinations. Factor analysis does not tell us that people are either extraverted or conscientious or that they like either “reflective and complex” music or “intense and rebellious” music. Instead, factors are constructs that operate independently of each other.

Although this might seem complicated, you already have an intuitive understanding of interactions. It probably would not surprise you, for example, to hear that the effect of receiving psychotherapy is stronger among people who are highly motivated to change than among people who are not motivated to change. This is an interaction because the effect of one independent variable (whether or not one receives psychotherapy) depends on the level of another (motivation to change). Schnall and her colleagues also demonstrated an interaction because the effect of whether the room was clean or messy on participants’ moral judgments depended on whether the participants were low or high in private body consciousness. If they were high in private body consciousness, then those in the messy room made harsher judgments.

In essence, factor analysis organizes the variables into a smaller number of clusters, such that they are strongly correlated within each cluster but weakly correlated between clusters. Each cluster is then interpreted as multiple measures of the same underlying construct. The Big Five personality factors have been identified through factor analyses of people’s scores on a large number of more specific traits. For example, measures of warmth, gregariousness, activity level, and positive emotions tend to be highly correlated with each other and are interpreted as representing the construct of extraversion.

Barnsdall Art Park Los Angeles, California

barnsdall house

The building bridges the Prairie style of the preceding decades and his textile block structures of the 1920s. Wright’s client, Aline Barnsdall, was the heir of one of the largest independent oil producers in the United States. A fiercely independent feminist who was immersed in the world of experimental theater, Aline flouted convention, first approaching Wright at the height of his personal scandals. Though Barnsdall initially envisioned an elaborate complex of residences, theaters, and shops to serve an avant-garde theater community, financial and artistic differences meant that the Hollyhock House and two secondary residences were the only buildings constructed. However, by 1921 Wright had built only the main house and two guest houses. With project delays and cost overruns, he then left the project only partially realized.

From the Hollywood Boulevard entrance, access three consecutive straight staircases from the bottom parking lot that cut up Olive Hill — named for its historic olive grove that dates to the late 1800s — then another set leading up to the Barnsdall Art Center for an approximate total of 130 steps. Hollyhock recently reopened for self-guided tours, with docents on hand to answer questions. Give yourself an hour to take in every detail of the modernist Hollyhock House’s splendor — especially its embellished art windows and magnificent fireplace — and stroll around the semicircular pool, inner courtyard and rooftop terraces. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for kids under 12 (with a paying adult), advance reservations required.

Docents are stationed around the museum on all of our self-guided tour days, eager to take questions and engage in dialogue with visitors. There are also detailed guide books provided for use onsite at no extra charge, available in both hard copy and digital formats. We are opening more outdoor spaces for public tours than ever before, expanding areas to explore, and enhancing air flow indoors. Make sure to admire the trees on both sides of the lower staircases as you make your climb. There are just over 500 olive trees in all at the park, thanks to 40 new ones planted in June.

At the end of junior high, I took my first Life Drawing class in the Director’s House. Wright was dismissed from the project in 1921, and Schindler finished the house (mostly the bedrooms) on his own accord. In 1923, Barnsdall again hired Wright to design a small kindergarten on the west side of the site for her daughter and the neighborhood children. Although the foundations for this project, affectionately called Little Dipper, were laid in 1923, the city halted the project, and the abandoned work was subsequently turned into a garden seating area by Schindler in 1924. The Hollyhock House is perched on top of the hill, a notable deviation from Wright’s designs during the earlier Prairie House years, when he declared buildings should be built into the hill.

As we started to approach summer, we were ready to count out Barnsdall Art Park’s Friday Night Wine Tastings. After all, it’s been nearly five years since we last were able to sample wines on the Hollyhock House’s west lawn, and we hadn’t heard a peep about them since. The museum is not available as a location for private events, photoshoots, filming, or fundraisers. We are limiting capacity and utilizing timed tickets to allow for greater social distancing. For the better part of their almost century of existence, both building and landscape were in disrepair.

In the 1950s and 1960s additional art center buildings, including a modern theatre, an art gallery, and studios, were built on Olive Hill in the park. In the 1990s the Olive Hill restoration master plan and work was completed, including restoring the original olive groves. Today, the Barnsdall Art Park features the LA Municipal Art Gallery, a community art center, a theater, and the beautifully restored Hollyhock House. Upon entering the house, visitors are transported to Los Angeles in the early 1920s.

In 2007, the City and Project Restore, a public-private partnership, began planning a project to address structural needs and restoration. In 2010, the project team began four years of work to repair and prevent water damage, seismically strengthen the house, restore historic elements, and reverse past alterations. Construction was supervised by Wright’s son Lloyd Wright, and the project brought a young Rudolf Schindler to Los Angeles. Due to intense differences between Wright and Barnsdall, only three buildings were constructed, and Barnsdall rarely occupied her residence. In 1927, she donated the property to the City of Los Angeles for use as an art park. As with many of Wright's residences, Hollyhock House has an "introverted" exterior with windows that seem hidden from the outside, and is not easy to decode from the outside.

Make art

To mark the occasion, Garcetti and O'Farrell participated in an official ribbon cutting ceremony with the project's collaborators at the Hollyhock House. Perched on a 36-acre hilltop in East Hollywood, Wright’s first and most widely known West Coast design defies stylistic categorization. Join our email list to receive event news and learn more about Hollyhock House history and programs. In 2006, Dirk Wynants, owner of the outdoor furniture company Extremis, purchased a circa-1850s farmhouse in Poperinge, a municipality in the Flanders region of Belgium. He spent the next seven years updating it, while staying within the area’s stringent preservation codes.

As with the event’s original incarnation, Silverlake Wine will curate the sips each week, and you’re welcome to bring along a blanket and some snacks to pair with all of that wine (just no outside booze—or any pets). Even if you have no interest in wine, the three-and-a-half-hour event is still worth it to soak up the summertime sunset vibes (you might want to do with the $15 designated driver ticket if you don’t plan on imbibing at all). PARKINGHollyhock House is located at the top of the hill in Barnsdall Art Park. Parking is free but limited and can be found in Barnsdall Park at the top and the bottom of the hill.

In 2014, the land preservation group Trustees of Reservations, which owns Powisset, embarked on a re-novation of its century-old barn, adding a net-positive teaching kitchen and building the lower level into a root cellar. "It was a drafty New England barn with old wood floors, single-pane windows, and doors that didn’t close well," recalls architect Stephanie Horowitz of Boston’s ZeroEnergy Design, the firm hired to reimagine the structure. We're rhapsodizing about the Friday Night Wine Tastings at Barnsdall Art Park, a hilltop reverie that involved excellent regional wines, picnic blankets, DJs at the turntables, and an often stunning sky show to the west.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s connection to Arizona, the location of his personal winter home Taliesin West, runs deep, with his architectural influence seen all over the Valley. Here, PhD student David R. Richardson gives a brief overview of several of Wright’s most notable projects in the Grand Canyon state. Check the calendar for upcoming tours led by expert docents, which provide a special look at the site and its history with the chance to ask questions. Like many houses designed by Wright, Hollyhock House proved to be better as an aesthetic work than as a livable dwelling. Water tended to flow over the central lawn and into the living room, and the flat roof terraces were conceived without an understanding of Los Angeles's rains. The cantilevered concrete also did not stand up well to the area's earthquakes.

Hollyhock House was designed by America’s most important 20th-century architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. The house was commissioned by oil heiress and theatre producer Aline Barnsdall. Aline Barnsdall was also a philanthropist and in 1927 gave the house and the surrounding twelve acres atop Olive Hill (now Barnsdall Park) to the City of Los Angeles as a memorial to her father Theodore. "This designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site underscores the significance of Los Angeles' rich history of modern architecture," said Mitch O’Farrell, former L.A. Hollyhock House has been involved in the Wright Virtual Visits program since its inception in April 2020, when sites prerecorded and shared short, informal videos on partner sites, highlighting specific design features and spaces. Check out the tours of sites like Fallingwater, Taliesin West, and Unity Temple HERE and tours of Hollyhock House created for partner sites HERE.

Within a few years, Barnsdall began to consider gifting the house and surrounding parklands to the City of Los Angeles. She never questioned the beauty or significance of Wright’s work on Olive Hill, but with early leaks and no theater to speak of, the house had lost its luster for Barnsdall. She did, however, reengage with Wright on numerous occasions after 1921, enlisting him to design a school house for the property as well as preliminary plans for another residence in Beverly Hills; neither were realized. California captivated both Barnsdall and Wright, and here the architect had the opportunity to develop a new regional expression, which broke from the acclaimed Prairie style he had developed in the Midwest. He took inspiration from building precedents native to the Southwest—the Pre-Hispanic and the Pueblo. In 1927, citing tax reasons and an inability to settle down, Barnsdall donated 13 acres of the property, including the main house and Residence A, to the City of Los Angeles.

One nice touch is fresh olive and pickle bar, featuring crunchy carrots, cauliflower and other pickled veg. Cooks will either slice the shawarma old school, with a thin, long serrated knife, or if it’s busy, they’ll pull out the electric shavers, which do the trick nicely. The vertical spits are clearly the stars at Hello Shawarma, wedged between a Hello Hookah and a Hello Thai in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it mall along south Harlem Avenue.

You choose from lamb, beef or chicken, sliced fresh. Then, either stuffed into pitas or stacked into sandwiches or rolled up in thin, lavash-like wraps. Joe’s is consistently one of the best steakhouses in town, and you shouldn’t even order steak.

So as we get older, it’s nice to hang onto a few things that manage to stay the same. Shaw’s Crab House is one of those places - a classic restaurant that continues to be the exact same great place in River North.

We appreciate Shaw’s for the right occasion, which can actually be any occasion as long as you’re willing to spend a bunch of money on seafood like oysters, crab legs, and sushi. It’s great for date night, dinner with family, or an all-out gathering of friends.

Located in the Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg, Shaw’s Crab House provides the perfect setting for any event ranging from intimate gatherings, graduations, rehearsal dinners, engagement parties. Birthday celebrations, bridal and baby showers, funeral memorials & receptions to corporate meetings or large events up to 200 guests. Our private dining menus feature a variety of fresh fish & seafood, prime steaks, signature sides & homemade desserts.

And while it’s nice, there are also often random tourists wandering in off the streets in their finest Hawaiian or I ❤️ Chicago shirts. Being locals, this means Shaw’s falls off our radar at times. Shaw’s Crab House is a Chicago institution that boasts a selection of seafood with a longstanding commitment to offering top quality ingredients since 1984. All offers are based on select sailings and categories and are subject to availability at time of booking. First, ships reel you in with a “cheap” room and an onboard credit but then smack you around with high-priced drinks, non-included restaurants, and dollar-a-minute Internet. Often cruise lines offer special rates that cannot be displayed to the general public.

Earn your wilderness badge as you cruise between the Alaska glaciers, pan for gold in prospecting towns, and trek across the rugged tundra on an Alaska vacation. And savor a burst of flavors throughout culture-rich ports in the Mediterranean, the British Isles, Scandinavia and beyond on an unforgettable cruise through Europe. No matter where in the world you choose to wander, cruises can take you deep into top-rated cruise ports and off-the-beaten-path gems, so you can experience each one like a local. Follow the tips above, get a cheap cruise, and enjoy a relaxing vacation without breaking the bank. As Chris from Chris Cruises states, “There are so many ships now, prices are at an all-time low.” Now is a great time to go on a cruise.

Do you want to learn more about a destination or cruise line? Learn all about cruising from the comfort of your own home with our live complimentary Virtual Cruise Lectures. I think a cruise is a great vacation because it is a chance to get away from everything and have a place where you can just relax. Sitting on a boat by the pool, drink in hand, without a care in the world. I eat well (all-day salad buffet), sleep well, head to the gym, and relax.

Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard.

I don’t think of it as “travel” but more of a relaxing break. Sail on a Star Clippers and visit ports often untouched by larger cruise ships, offering passengers the activities, amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht. Princess offers up to $250 free onboard spending money as a way to thank the brave men and women of the American and Canadian militaries for their service.

If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings, as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet. Choose from the best cruise deals and specials from a variety of cruise lines, destinations, departure ports, sailing dates and cruise lengths.

This is my favorite cruise site, as it seems to find all the deals and makes finding a cheap cruise easy. Cruise deals are your key to scoring a perfect vacation at sea without breaking your budget. Whether you're looking for a last-minute deal, discounts on a luxury cruise or family-friendly cruise deal, or extra onboard credit, finding real deals on cruises can take a lot of work. Cruise lines and travel agents offer a huge variety of confusing extras -- some that are an amazing value and others that aren't. It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach?
